A recent meta-analysis (Arch Phys Med Rehabil. 2011 Sep;92(9):1490-500.) found that a high level of physical therapy decreases length of stay and significantly improves mobility, activity, and quality of life. Despite this research, our profession is under attack.
In October of 2011, Medicare cut the amount of physical therapy it would cover in certain settings. Clearly, we need to advocate for ourselves! Our patients can help us by sharing facts provided in this packet and by sharing personal success stories with their representatives.
We encourage you to develop a Parting Packet to give to your patients that includes an easy way for them to communicate with their representatives about the importance they place on physical therapy. You may want to consider including envelops addressed to their senators and representatives or a piece of paper that includes these addresses.
